Volvo Penta Exhaust Elbow, Part Number 861906
This is the exhaust elbow or water injection elbow for the D1-13, D1, 20, D1-30, D2-40 and MD2010, MD2020, MD2030 and MD2040 series. This is the more common standard type and not the high riser type. (For D series, see part number 3884165, for MD series, see part number 3581031) Exhaust elbows are a common cause of overheating and poor exhaust flow of water out of the transom. Failure to check the exhaust can result in water entering the cylinders, causing severe damage to the engine.
The elbow on any small diesel should be removed every 4-5 years and checked for carbon build-up and rust. This can result in the engine overheating and a lack of performance. On a D1, D2 or MD series, the exhaust elbow 861906 should be removed at least every 5 years and checked internally for corrosion and blockages. If in doubt, change it using the gasket 861907. Remember, the outer water jacket, where rust builds up, cannot be cleaned due to a lack of access.
It is not uncommon for aftermarket non-genuine elbows to corrode more quickly. We have seen some aftermarket stainless exhausts fracture and explode.
A Stainless exhaust should not be fitted to any Volvo Penta diesel engine. They can cause the heat exchanger to corrode quickly and stainless is not designed to be heated and cooled repeatedly. This leads to a fracture of the exhaust elbow. Only use genuine Volvo Penta parts to ensure the safe operation of your diesel for you and your family and crew.
