Technical information: 2.7 Litres of Gear oil; API GL-5 SAE 80w/90 oil.
Volvo Penta 290-DP Sterndrive. We supply all parts for the 290-DP sterndrive. The service and spare parts list include sterndrive prop removal tools, anodes, drive and exhaust bellows, hoses, oils, shaft grease and shaft seals. Sterndrives use different types of gear oils, depending on the sterndrive type. See the individual sterndrive sections or our downloads section for more information.
It is important to use genuine anodes on a Volvo 290-DP Sterndrive. Volvo Penta anodes and made to exact specifications to protect the Sterndrive from corrosion. We have seen evidence of counterfeit anodes and this can lead to a total loss of the Sterndrive from corrosion.
290-DP Sterndrives use either A-type, B-type, the new J type or C-type stainless propellers.

Volvo Penta Sterndrives should be serviced at the end of every season to ensure the oil is not emulsified, indicating that the shaft seals require changing. This is a drain plug O-ring for the 290-DP, DP-E other DP drives listed below. This is the larger option for an MS25S and some 120S-E Saildrives whereas the other option, part number 3855081 is a much smaller O-ring measuring about 6-7mm.
