The D1-30 Volvo Penta diesel is the current model. The Volvo Penta D1-30 is a 3-cylinder, freshwater-cooled engine that is compact, quiet, and environmentally efficient. This D1-30 meets BSO, EU RCD Stage II, US. EPA Tier 3 emissions.

The heat exchanger on any D1-30 should be cleaned, and the 4 O-rings changed every 5 years to prevent overheating. The exhaust elbow should also be removed every few years, especially if the engine is run for extended periods on low revs, as there could be a build-up of carbon within the exhaust elbow. The exhaust elbow should be checked and/ or changed after about 10 years due to possible corrosion build-up within the saltwater jacket around the outer casing of the exhaust elbow. A stainless aftermarket exhaust is not recommended on any compact diesel.
Older D1-30 diesel engines may run on Volvo green coolant, and newer ones may be using yellow VCS coolant. Please do not mix or change the coolant type once one or the other has been used. If you are running on Volvo Penta green coolant, continue to use green coolant. Mixing yellow and green coolant can cause gelling and blockages within the cooling system.

Volvo Penta Coolant VCS-2 (orange) contains new inhibitors that are adapted to the materials used in modern engines. VCS (orange) offers improved protection against corrosion and the build-up of deposits. It helps counteract cavitations and galvanic corrosion. The change interval is 4 years for VCS2 orange coolant and can be mixed with VCS yellow coolant. It must not be added to any previously used green coolant engine.
