The Volvo Penta D3 diesel range is defined by earlier and later variants. The latter range is from D to H. Therefore, some parts including impellers change part numbers between earlier models and the latest variants. The Volvo Penta D3 is a 5-cylinder fresh water-cooled engine, quiet and environmentally efficient. The new D3 meets IMO NOx (D3-200 & D3-220), EU RCD Stage II, US. EPA Tier 3 emissions.

The heat exchanger on any D3 should be cleaned and the "O" rings changed, every 5 years to prevent overheating.
Older D3 diesel engines may run on Volvo green coolant and newer ones may be using yellow VCS coolant. Please do not mix or change the coolant type once one or other has been used. If you are running on Volvo Penta green coolant, continue to use green coolant. Mixing yellow and green coolant can cause gelling and blockages within the cooling system.
