This is the Water Injection Elbow - threaded end type.

It is important to remove the exhaust elbow on the MD7A, MD7B, MD11C, MD11D, MD17C, MD17D or any other diesel every few years to check for carbon build-up and corrosion within the water mixing chamber. If the exhaust gases cannot escape, the engine will be down on power, and if the water jacket around the elbow is blocked with rust, the water can enter the cylinders and destroy the engine.

It is impossible to clean the water jacket chamber and thus, the exhaust should be changed if in doubt. We have seen some stainless aftermarket exhausts explode under-use, and we strongly recommend that only a Volvo Penta genuine exhaust elbow be fitted.
