Technical Specification: Current D4 series diesel range. Four-cylinder, 3.7-litre diesel, 150 hp to 370 hp. The oil capacity is approximately 11- 12.5 litres of VDS 4.5 oil. The coolant capacity for a D4 is approximately 13 litres of either green or VCS yellow coolant. They must not be mixed.
The D4 Volvo Penta diesel is the current model. The Volvo Penta D4 is a 3.7 litre, in-line 4-cylinder fresh water-cooled engine, quiet and environmentally efficient. The new D4 meets emission compliance IMO NOx, EU RCD Stage II, and US EPA Tier 3.

The heat exchanger and air cooler on any D4 should be cleaned and all the "O" rings changed, every 5 years to prevent overheating and joint corrosion. Older D4 diesel engines may run on Volvo green coolant and newer ones may be using yellow VCS coolant. Please do not mix or change the coolant type once one or another has been used. If you are running on Volvo Penta green coolant, continue to use green coolant. Mixing yellow and green coolant can cause gelling and blockages within the cooling system.

VCS-2 (orange) offers improved protection against corrosion and the build-up of deposits. This new version further helps protect the environment and helps counteract cavitations and galvanic corrosion. The change interval is 4 years for VCS-2 and the product can be safely mixed with the outgoing VCS yellow coolant.
